Bloomingdale's CEO Olivier Bron on Reinventing the US Department Store

other · 2026-09-29

Olivier Bron, the CEO of Bloomingdale's and a former executive at Bain & Company, Galeries Lafayette, and Bangkok's Central Group, spoke with Tyler Brûlé, chairman of Monocle, about the prospects for US department stores in Paris. In Q1 2023, Bloomingdale's experienced a 10.2% increase in sales, in stark contrast to the difficulties faced by Saks and Neiman Marcus. Bron believes that while department stores must evolve, they are far from obsolete. He plans to realign Bloomingdale's brand identity to international luxury standards, transitioning from premium contemporary to high-end luxury. Over the next five years, renovations will target the New York flagship and ten additional locations, focusing on local market adaptation and enhancing customer engagement beyond mere transactions.
