Biidaasige Park's Western Expansion Opens on Toronto's Eastern Waterfront

The four-hectare western expansion of Biidaasige Park has opened to the public on Toronto's eastern waterfront, adding new amenities to the already acclaimed park. Designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates (MVVA) with a team of specialists, the expansion includes Canoe Cove, a launch point for canoes and kayaks (rentals available next year), a 3,000-person event lawn created from soils excavated from the river valley, and a waterfront promenade with views of the CN Tower and East Bayfront. The park also features the Lassonde Art Trail, now expanded to 15 works by internationally renowned artists, including a piece by Alexa Kumiko Hatanaka with fish-shaped windsocks symbolizing the return of wildlife to the Don River. Later this year, Kent Monkman's debut public art commission will be installed. The expansion also includes the Waterfront Neighbourhood Space, a temporary circular pavilion by GXN built with reclaimed materials from Toronto projects, including lumber from residential renovations, CMU blocks from construction sites, and bricks from a demolished church. The park is part of a larger effort to renaturalize the Don River and transform a former industrial wasteland. Despite limited transit access, the park is connected to pedestrian and bike trails and accessible by water shuttle. A planned LRT line will improve connectivity in the future. The project has been described as 'once-in-a-generation' and has created a sense of place in a formerly placeless area.
