Bigert & Bergström's Crystal Sauna Anchors WasteLand Park in Skellefteå

architecture-design · 2026-06-24

The Crystal Sauna, a public artwork and functioning social space by the artist duo Bigert & Bergström, is set to become the architectural anchor of WasteLand, a new public park in Ursviken, Skellefteå, Sweden. Designed for the city of Skellefteå, the sauna embodies the philosophy 'From waste to promise,' transforming a heavily contaminated former industrial site into a regenerative urban development that integrates contemporary art and climate science. The project, with a 50 m² footprint and slated for 2026, is curated by Nina Vuga and features a team including architects Nordmark & Nordmark Architects, with general contractor Skelleftebygg. Key contributors include lighting consultant Ljusdesign AB, civil engineering by Thyréns AB, electrical work by Per Burén and Eltech, and project management by Futurniture. The sauna's design incorporates materials such as PVD-coated mirror stainless steel sheets, IKI Sauna products, Norra Timber, and Spa-Plex. Photographs of the project are by Pär Olofsson and Jonas Westling. The initiative is part of broader urban planning by the City of Skellefteå, aiming to create a space where visitors can physically experience issues of climate, technology, and social transformation.
