Biennale Teatro 2026 Announces 'Alter Native' Festival Program in Venice

The 54th International Theatre Festival, titled 'Alter Native,' will take place in Venice from June 7 to 21, 2026, under the artistic direction of Willem Dafoe. The festival will feature over 200 artists across 55 events, including 11 productions and co-productions, with 10 world premieres, 2 European debuts, and 4 Italian presentations. Dafoe explained the theme as exploring concepts of change ('alter') and nature or origin ('native'), emphasizing diverse cultural perspectives. Highlights include Greek artist Christos Stergioglou's concert-performance 'Cries,' inspired by refugee poetry and Euripides; Mario Banushi's trilogy 'Romance familiare,' co-produced with Fondation Cartier; Japanese director Satoshi Miyagi's 'Mugen Noh Othello,' blending Shakespeare with Noh traditions; and performances from Indonesia's Bumi Purnati company, India's Odissi dancer Sharmila Biswas, and Rwandan artist Dorcy Rugamba's 'Hewa Rwanda – Letter to the Absent,' addressing the 1994 genocide. Italian contributions include Emma Dante's new work 'I fantasmi di Basile' and Davide Iodice's 'Promemoria,' focusing on elderly residents. The festival includes Biennale College initiatives for emerging artists, workshops, and educational programs. Venues span Venice's Arsenale, Ca' Giustinian, historic theaters, and locations in Mestre and Marghera. A documentary on Dafoe's avant-garde theater work will air on Rai 5. The Biennale continues its sustainability efforts with carbon neutrality certifications.
