Bernar Venet Installs Monumental Steel Sculpture 'Désordre Vertical' at Palais de la Légion d'honneur in Paris

exhibition · 2026-09-17

Bernar Venet has installed 'Désordre Vertical', a monumental steel sculpture created specifically for the cour d'honneur of the Palais de la Légion d'honneur — the former Hôtel de Salm in Paris's 7th arrondissement. The work, a burst of steel bars rising vertically, will be inaugurated ahead of the Journées européennes du patrimoine and remain visible for one year starting 18 September 2026. The Fondation Art Explora supported the sculpture's realization and will offer a free mediation programme during the Journées européennes du patrimoine, led by its volunteers. The installation continues Venet's practice of placing works in major heritage sites; he was notably the first major abstract artist to confront his work with the gardens of Le Nôtre. The cour d'honneur of the Hôtel de Salm, both an institutional space and one tied to the history of the French Republic, gives particular resonance to the new installation. The initiative also supports efforts to modernize France's first national order and to create engagement around recipients of the decoration by showing their work. After the one-year display, the sculpture will remain visible from public space through the gates of the cour d'honneur and from the Musée de la Légion d'honneur et des ordres de chevalerie. Art Explora's backing aligns with its mission to foster cultural sharing through mobility, digital initiatives, support for creation and an engaged community.
