Beneath Jeoji Oreum House by a root architecture

The Beneath Jeoji Oreum House, designed by the architecture firm a root architecture, is a residential project completed in 2024 on Jeju Island, South Korea. The house, with an area of 106 square meters, is situated in the context of Jeoji Oreum, one of the island's distinctive volcanic cones. The design process went beyond the physical terrain, considering the scale and orientation of the oreum, the movement of sunlight throughout the day, and the historical cultivation and habitation of the land. The architects aimed to incorporate the accumulated lives, memories, and time into the concept of place. The project was led by principal architects Kang Jungyoon and Lee Changkyu, with landscaping also by a root architecture. Structural engineering was provided by Doohang Structure, mechanical and electrical engineering by Hansung ENG, and construction by Davom Housing. The project was curated by Miwa Negoro and photographed by Park Youngchae. Suppliers include American Standard, Legrand, DOMUS METAL, Durastack, Eagon, and Younhyun Trading.
