Beauty of Science Collective Unveils Crystal Garden: Seasons Series with Natural Crystal Growth in Glass Petri Dishes

The collective Beauty of Science, founded by Yan Liang, Ph.D., has introduced the art series Crystal Garden: Seasons. This project features colorful crystals that grow naturally within rows of glass Petri dishes. The artist establishes specific conditions—temperature, saturation, container, and pigment—then allows the crystallization process to unfold autonomously. Over hours and days, minerals expand to fill the containers, forming intricate landscapes with spires, lattices, and thickets. Each composition visually represents a season through its color palette: cool blues and whites, saturated greens, deep reds, and burnished golds. The series title uses 'garden' as a metaphor for the interplay between human intention and natural processes. According to the collective, the work embodies an Eastern philosophical and poetic sensibility, exploring the uncontrollable forces of nature. The glass dishes serve as temporary homes where crystalline forms branch and multiply, creating organic patterns that sometimes resemble flowers or snowflakes. The project is an extension of Liang's earlier initiative, Beautiful Chemistry.
