Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin design Art Deco dining car for Belmond's British Pullman

On 15 May, Belmond's British Pullman launched a new private dining car named Celia, dating back to 1932, with interiors designed by film director Baz Luhrmann and production designer Catherine Martin. The couple created a backstory for Celia as a 1930s Shakespearean actress whose performance of Titania in A Midsummer Night's Dream inspired the railcar. The décor features Art Deco elements: burl veneers, marquetry, stained glass, mosaic, and saturated reds, a signature color from their previous work. Luhrmann describes the experience as being transported into another world, where guests become part of a story unfolding through the English countryside. Destinations this summer include Bath, Bletchley Park, Chatsworth, and Whitstable. This follows their previous project, Monsieur, a bar in New York's East Village inspired by a fictional nightclub impresario. Belmond, owned by LVMH, has a history of collaborating with arts figures: Wes Anderson designed the Cygnus parlour car in 1951, and in 2024 French artist JR unveiled L'Observatoire on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. Celia seats 12 and is available for exclusive use from £15,000.
