Banksy's Grin Reaper: A 2005 Print Merging Death with Rave-Era Smiley Culture

Created in 2005, Banksy's screen print 'Grin Reaper' features the Grim Reaper perched on a clock face, wielding a scythe, with a vibrant yellow smiley face replacing its skull. Released by Pictures on Walls in London, this signed edition of 300 merges themes of mortality with the playful spirit of rave culture and dark humor. The clock, set close to midnight, alludes to the Doomsday Clock, yet the smiley face injects a sense of denial and distraction. The motif debuted on anti-war placards during the 2003 Iraq War in London and appeared as a street piece in Shoreditch in 2004. Banksy revisited this imagery during his 2013 New York residency and at Dismaland in 2015. A related artwork, 'Brace Yourself!', was showcased at Hard Rock Cafe Piccadilly Circus in March 2023 and fetched $2,032,000 at Julien's Auctions on 29 March 2023. The 'Grin Reaper' print measures roughly 70 x 44 cm, with known artist's proofs on black and aluminum foil. The highest auction price for a signed version reached £106,500 at Bonhams, London, in December 2020 for number 168/300. Currently, the print is on display at GraffitiStreet Gallery in Chichester.
