Bangkok's Art Scene Booms with New Dib Museum and Thriving Galleries

Bangkok's contemporary art scene is experiencing a boom, led by the opening of Dib, Thailand's first major private contemporary art museum. The museum, housed in former metallurgical warehouses, was initiated by late energy drink tycoon Petch Osathanugrah and completed by his son Chang. Architect Kulapat Yantrasast, a disciple of Tadao Andō, designed the minimalist restoration, featuring a social piazza with pools and a tower for a James Turrell light installation. Dib showcases local Thai artists like Montien Boonma, Somboon Hormtientong, and Surasi Kusolwong alongside international names. Other key venues include the Bangkok Art & Culture Centre, Jim Thompson Art Center, Kunsthalle Bangkok, and galleries like SAC, Ver, Nova, and Cartel. The Bangkok Kunsthalle, a former printing press that burned down in the early 2000s, reopened three years ago under Marisa Chearavanont, offering an apocalyptic setting for experimental works. In summer 2024, Korakrit Arunanondchai presented 'The Death of Death' there. The scene is further energized by the Khao Yai Art Forest, featuring installations by Richard Long and Elmgreen & Dragset.
