B.E. Architecture's Casa Piva Conceals Courtyard Living Behind a White Brick Facade in Malvern East

architecture-design · 2026-09-29

In the Melbourne suburb of Malvern East, Casa Piva stands as a newly constructed home, crafted by B.E. Architecture for director Andrew Piva. The residence features a stark white brick exterior that offers minimal insight into its interior, which the architects liken to a "cocoon" designed for a family-oriented lifestyle amidst urban density. Concealed from the street, the ground level includes communal areas and open courtyards for living, cooking, dining, and entertaining, while three bedrooms are situated upstairs. Access is through a spacious courtyard and a deliberately narrow arch. The interiors blend brick, timber, and travertine, evoking a tactile, earthy feel reminiscent of the past. Custom joinery enhances the texture, with antique oak lining rooms like the study and kitchen. The design reflects the family's Italian heritage through its simplicity and thoughtfully selected materials. Andrew Piva notes that the project was a more introspective endeavor, focusing on how the spaces could enhance family rituals. Architectural influences from various eras are subtly reinterpreted, inviting personal interpretation. Photography by Timothy Kaye captures the essence of the home.
