Azzedine Alaïa’s African Inspirations Explored in New Paris Exhibition

'Azzedine Alaïa and Africa,' a new exhibition at the Fondation Azzedine Alaïa in Paris, has been curated by Olivier Saillard and Carla Sozzani. This showcase delves into the profound connection the Tunisian-born designer had with the continent. Alaïa moved to Paris at the age of 21 and remained there until his passing in 2017, yet African influences were evident in his creations. The exhibition opens with his fondness for the mashrabiya, a traditional North African architectural feature, reimagined in fringed leather and laser-cut cotton. Key pieces include a red bustier dress with rope fringe, a dress adorned with pony skin and horsehair, and an evening gown reminiscent of Cleopatra. The display runs from July 7, 2026, to January 4, 2027, at 18 rue de la Verrerie, 75004 Paris.
