Ayo Akingbade's 'Crossing' Debuts at Kunsthalle Zürich

exhibition · 2026-09-26

Ayo Akingbade, a filmmaker and artist from London, presents her inaugural institutional solo exhibition outside the UK at Kunsthalle Zürich. Running from 26 September 2026 to 10 January 2027, the exhibition, titled 'Crossing,' showcases two new works alongside earlier pieces from her filmography. Akingbade's films intertwine experimental documentary, fiction, and personal essay, exploring architecture through the lens of bodies, communities, and daily life. Sites such as social housing, shopping centers, factories, and public areas reveal narratives of labor, migration, gentrification, and displacement. Featured works include The Fist (2022), shot at the Guinness brewery in Lagos, and Deadphant (2020), which captures the Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre in London before its closure, alongside Nichtschwimmer (2026) and the newly commissioned Two Truths (2026) filmed in Zurich. Throughout 'Crossing,' movement serves as a lens for understanding urban spaces and the ways individuals engage with and reshape their surroundings.
