Australian architecture firm designs flyover gallery around a gum tree
Farrell Wray Architects has completed the Marcellin Flyover Gallery at Marcellin College in Victoria, Australia, an open-air walkway bridge that wraps around a large gum tree. The project, a renovation of an existing bridge between a senior school building (built 1963) and a junior school building, was commissioned after the firm's earlier flyover gallery at Caroline Chisholm College in Braybrook (2015) boosted school enrolment. Architects Ellie Farrell and Brad Wray designed an elliptical opening for the tree to pass through, contrasting geometric form with organic nature. A tree root scan guided column placement to protect the root system. The elevation references St Marcellin Champagnat's Hermitage building in France, using two a-proportional archways. The walkway now also displays student artwork in custom 'art boxes'.
