Aurora Arquitectos Renovates Lapa Townhouse, Adds Floors, Hides Intervention Behind Facade

Aurora Arquitectos completed the Remédios à Lapa Building renovation and upward extension in 2026 in Lisbon's Lapa district. The 390 m² project adds two new upper floors while leaving the street facade untouched, preserving classical limestone surrounds, window proportions, wrought iron balconies, and terracotta roof tiles. The key interior feature is a burgundy lacquered staircase that rises through the full height of the house, drawing natural light downward from a skylight. A four-panel sliding door system with a cross-shaped ceiling track, executed by Facecamo, concentrates circulation at each floor. The bathrooms are fully clad in cream limestone with a contrasting terracotta marble shower zone. The attic is clad entirely in the same limestone, opening to the Lapa roofscape through pointed arched dormers. Decoration by Labaye Sumi completes the interior. The project respects the neighborhood's architectural constraints, making the intervention invisible from the street while generating spatial richness inside.
