Aubrey Theobald and Kristina Popov Explore Cemetery as Affective Archive at Phantom Pförtnerhaus Berlin

The exhibition titled Phantom Pförtnerhaus | Chapter 3, featuring artists Aubrey Theobald and Kristina Popov, is currently displayed at the Georgen-Parochial-Friedhof II gatehouse in Berlin until September 26, 2026. Curated by Iana Pitenko, the show commenced on September 5 and interprets the cemetery as an emotional archive, inspired by Olivia Laing's idea of a garden resisting time. The artists utilize found objects, experimental photography, field recordings, and sensory installations to highlight overlooked aspects of the site, such as WWII bullet holes and dried flowers. Pitenko’s curatorial text invokes Kathleen Stewart's concept of ordinary affects, portraying phantoms as enduring entities that resonate today. The exhibition presents the cemetery as a vibrant space where history is interwoven with matter, nature, memory, and atmosphere, engaging with the Pförtnerhaus, a site rich in histories of transformation. Located at Friedenstraße 80, 10249 Berlin, the exhibition's photography is credited to Chroma Studio Berlin, Aubrey Theobald, and Iana Pitenko, and is published by Catapult Contemporary, an independent editorial platform from Vienna.
