Atlassian Central tops out as world's tallest hybrid timber tower in Sydney

In Sydney, Australia, the Atlassian Central has reached its full height of 180 metres, marking it as the tallest hybrid timber tower globally. Designed by SHoP Architects and BVN Architecture, this 39-storey structure serves as the headquarters for the tech firm Atlassian. It exceeds the previous record, the Ascent tower in Milwaukee, by nearly 100 metres. The innovative design incorporates timber, steel, and concrete, featuring concrete cores that support mass timber floors and a steel exoskeleton. This design aims for a 50% reduction in upfront embodied carbon and a 50% enhancement in operational energy efficiency compared to traditional office towers. The project, adjacent to Sydney Central Station and built over the historic Parcels Shed, is expected to be finished by late 2026. SHoP's Andreia Teixeira emphasized its role in redefining communal spaces, while BVN's Peter Titmuss described it as a significant prototype for mass-timber towers.
