Artist talk with Umida Akhmedova, Oleg Karpov, and Mikhail Gulin at Ambasada Kultury

In Berlin, Ambasada Kultury and Pickle Bar are hosting a discussion featuring artists Umida Akhmedova, Oleg Karpov, and Mikhail Gulin. This event will showcase presentations from residents and foster an open dialogue about the impact of art on social and political contexts. Akhmedova and Karpov have spent over twenty years collaborating on documentary films, photography, and visual anthropology that delve into themes of memory, tradition, gender, and social transformation in post-Soviet Uzbekistan. Akhmedova, a filmmaker and photographer, tackles issues of gender inequality and human rights, leading to significant discussions and conflicts with authorities. She was awarded the Václav Havel International Prize for Creative Dissent in 2016. Karpov, a filmmaker, critic, and curator, has been involved with Uzkinochronika, Uzbekfilm, and Tashkent Television, and has established various cultural initiatives. Together, they have produced more than 100 films. Gulin, a conceptual artist from Belarus residing in Germany, engages with painting, performance, video, and installation, addressing topics such as ideology and political repression. The talk will be conducted in Russian with English interpretation, lasts 90 minutes, and is free to attend.
