Artist Giles Miller transforms 1930s Suffolk bungalow with metal facade artwork

Giles Miller redesigned a 1930s bungalow in Waldringfield, Suffolk, over three years, adding a new upstairs space and rearranging interiors. The facade features a metal trellis of 'petals' inspired by local industrial history and the River Deben's natural elements. Client Jo Gillingwater sought a complete overhaul, granting Miller creative freedom. The artwork offsets from the building, casting shadows and supporting climbing jasmine to integrate with the environment. Miller's studio aimed to create a calming domestic experience through this one-off commission, blending artistic decoration with functional performance. The project references Art Deco and Arts and Crafts influences common in interwar British housing. Miller frequently visits the owners, noting visitor excitement about the facade's impact.
