Arthur Boyd's St. Francis Tapestries Unveiled in Full at National Gallery of Australia

exhibition · 2026-06-19

From 20 June to 18 October 2026, the National Gallery of Australia (NGA) in Kamberri Canberra will showcase all twenty monumental tapestries created by Arthur Boyd that illustrate the St. Francis legend. Boyd, who passed away in 1999, never had the opportunity to see the entire series displayed. The tapestries, crafted in Portugal between 1972 and 1974, were acquired in 1975 by NGA director James Mollison. Curated by Elspeth Pitt, the exhibition also features original pastel drawings and lithographs. Each tapestry, based on transparencies, contains 2,500 stitches per square metre. Boyd's fascination with St. Francis began in Murrumbeena, Melbourne, where he exhibited related works in 1965. Sasha Grishin has praised the display for highlighting key moments in the saint's life.
