Arthouse: A Private Collection Goes Public in Marble Falls, Texas

A new gallery named Arthouse has opened its doors in Marble Falls, Texas, a town with a population of approximately 10,000. This venue provides a glimpse into one of the most significant private art collections in the United States, curated by Mickey and Jeanne Klein, who have been passionate about contemporary art for nearly five decades under the guidance of renowned Houston benefactor Dominique de Menil. The collection features works from established artists like Olafur Eliasson and James Turrell, alongside emerging talents. The Kleins, who relocated from Midland, engaged San Antonio's Lake Flato for architectural design, resulting in a structure adorned with local Leuders limestone and a serene courtyard by Sada Uchiyama. The gallery spans 2,000 square feet, boasts 12-foot ceilings, and includes a linear skylight. Its inaugural exhibition, 'Words Matter,' showcases text-driven art from Ed Ruscha, Jenny Holzer, Faith Ringgold, Kenturah Davis, and Nicolas Galanin, whose piece 'Never Forget' transforms the 'Hollywoodland' sign into 'Indianland.' The Kleins will curate new exhibitions every few months. At 90, Mickey Klein highlights the joy of sharing art: 'I'm getting so much pleasure out of it. Why not do it?'
