Artemisia Gentileschi's Annunciation to Debut in Milan This Autumn

Artemisia Gentileschi's Annunciation (1630) will be exhibited at Milan's Museo Diocesano Carlo Maria Martini from October 27, 2026, to January 31, 2027, as part of the Un Capolavoro per Milano initiative. The painting, on loan from the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples, is the artist's first known work executed in Naples after her arrival in 1629. It reveals Caravaggesque influence and her father Orazio Gentileschi's teachings, with chiaroscuro and chromaticism reflecting French Caravaggisti and Massimo Stanzione, while sumptuous drapery recalls Nicolas Régnier. The painting's original destination is uncertain; its size (257 x 179 cm) suggests an altarpiece or private chapel. It entered the Real Museo Borbonico in 1815. The exhibition is supported by Fondazione Bracco, which also funds non-invasive diagnostic analyses to be published during the show. Curators are Mario Epifani (Capodimonte) and Nadia Righi (Museo Diocesano). The catalog is edited by Dario Cimorelli. Un Capolavoro per Milano, launched in 2001, has previously featured works by Caravaggio, Antonello da Messina, Veronese, Raphael, Botticelli, Mantegna, and Lorenzo Lotto. The initiative averages 25,000 visitors per edition.
