Ariane Mnouchkine's Theatrical Legacy and New Production 'Ici sont les dragons'

Ariane Mnouchkine, born March 3, 1939 in Boulogne-Billancourt, has led the Théâtre du Soleil for over sixty years since founding the unique troupe in 1964. Her current production 'Ici sont les dragons' explores the emergence of totalitarian regimes through theatrical epic. Mnouchkine's career includes approximately thirty often-cult productions, ranging from Shakespeare cycles to 'Le Dernier Caravansérail'. She discovered her theatrical calling while at Oxford University, where she assisted future filmmaker Ken Loach. The artist comes from a theatrical family—her mother hailed from theater lineage, and her father was a film producer. Her grandparents were Russian Jews exiled to France before being deported and killed at Auschwitz. Mnouchkine's work is characterized by monumental staging, historical and political frescoes, and collective creation at the Cartoucherie de Vincennes. At 87, she remains an exceptional figure in French theater.
