Architect Axel Burrough, Designer of Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre, Dies at 79

Axel Burrough, an architect known for his work on significant cultural projects, has passed away at age 79. He was a key designer of the Royal Exchange theatre in Manchester, a futuristic heptagonal theatre-in-the-round structure built within a historic neo-classical building. Burrough, who worked with Levitt Bernstein Architects, also contributed to the renovation of St Luke's church for the London Symphony Orchestra. The Royal Exchange theatre design was influenced by space-age aesthetics following the 1969 moon landing, featuring a modular steel and glass construction placed inside the former trading hall after it ceased operations in 1968.
