Arch Hades' 'Return | Ritorno' Explores Existentialism and Impermanence in Venice

Arch Hades' multidisciplinary exhibition 'Return | Ritorno' is on view at the Scoletta Battioro e Tiraoro di Venezia from May 7 to November 1, 2026, supported by the Erarta Foundation. The show draws on St. Bede's seventh-century sparrow parable and the landscape of Venice's cemetery island San Michele to frame human life as a brief flash of consciousness between two voids. Hades' work bridges existentialism and Romanticism, exploring themes of love, loss, and disappearance. Key works include the 'Confessions' series (2025-26), fibreglass sculptures resembling crumpled notebook pages immortalizing real journal entries; 'Isle,' featuring a white-shrouded figure on an island made of books; 'Sphinx' (2026), an Egyptian-silhouette sculpture that invites viewers inside to confront existential choice; 'Rain' (2025), where sentences rain down and melt; and 'Murmuring Bark' (2025), incorporating forest whispers. The 'Return' triptych (2025) borrows from medieval altarpiece form, placing everyday figures in a sacred framework. Hades' poem 'Patchwork' (2023) is etched on 'Sphinx,' and 'The Flowers Bloom' (2023) appears in 'Rain.' The exhibition emphasizes that value lies in the act of existence itself, not permanence.
