Arashi Yanagawa Blends Masculine Tailoring with Feminine Codes at Berlin Spring 2027

Japanese designer Arashi Yanagawa presented his spring 2027 collection for John Lawrence Sullivan at Berlin Fashion Week, marking his return after a debut last year through the “Berlin Contemporary” funding program. The collection explored androgyny, inspired by Bettina Rheims’s 1990 photo series Modern Lovers. Yanagawa, a former professional boxer who founded his label in 2003, used precise tailoring as a foundation, disrupting it with lace, mesh tulle, crushed velvet, and skirt-like shorts. He cited shibari as a cultural reference, with straps cinching blazers and shirts. Nancy Grossman’s bondage drawings also influenced leather waist corsets and lace tops. Yanagawa incorporated womenswear since 2010 but focused on menswear, emphasizing integrity. The show featured models with slicked-back hair, echoing Rheims’s portraits.
