Apollinaria Broche's 'What Colour Is Your Scream' at Union Pacific

Apollinaria Broche's exhibition 'What Colour Is Your Scream' at Union Pacific, London, presents ceramic and bronze sculptures that anthropomorphize roadside flowers as portraits of women's voices. Broche gathered foliage from Pietrasanta's roadsides and asked women what color their scream would be, collaborating with sound artist Manus1ck to capture the sounds. The sculptures, standing near human height, are made using raku and bronze techniques, with some retaining a scent of fire. They are arranged across the gallery like a verge, each releasing a voice when touched. The work responds to the historical suppression of women's vocal rituals, from ancient Greece to 19th-century Paris. Broche, born in Moscow in 1995 and based between Pietrasanta and Paris, previously made these portraits as private gifts. The exhibition title poses the same question to the public.
