Anna Hyatt Huntington's Monumental Sculptures and Legacy Across American Public Spaces

Anna Hyatt Huntington, originally named Anna Vaughn Hyatt, was an influential sculptor of the 20th century, celebrated for her animal and equestrian sculptures. She was inspired by her zoologist father, Alpheus Hyatt, and other female family members. Her artistic journey began in New York around 1902-1903, where she initially sold small animal figurines. In 1915, she made history as the first woman awarded a public art commission in Manhattan with her statue of Joan of Arc located in Riverside Park. After joining the National Academy of Design in 1922, she married Archer Huntington the following year. In 1927, she created El Cid Campeador for the Hispanic Society, and in 1931, they established Brookgreen Gardens. Her works are featured in numerous institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
