Anish Kapoor's Hayward Show, Recovered Masterpieces, and More in Art Weekly
The Guardian's weekly art dispatch highlights Anish Kapoor's 'exhilarating' exhibition at London's Hayward Gallery, featuring black holes and a mountain-like installation, running until 18 October. Other notable shows include France-Lise McGurn's semi-figurative paintings at Dundee Contemporary Arts (22 August–15 November), Tracey Emin's curated graduation show 'Tears Final Show' at TKE Studios in Margate (until 31 August), Caroline Walker's social realist paintings at Newlyn Art Gallery (until 31 October), and Martin Brown's Horrible Histories-inspired drawings at The Harris in Preston (until 31 August). The image of the week shows Italian Carabinieri in Parma's Ducal Palace with three recovered paintings stolen from the Magnani Rocca Foundation: Cézanne's 'Still Life with Cherries' (valued £5.2m), Renoir's 'Fish' (£2.6m), and Matisse's 'Odalisque on the Terrace' (£17,000), alongside a 1573 fresco by Bertoia. The masterpiece of the week is Francisque Millet's 'Mountain Landscape with Lightning' (c.1675) at the National Gallery, London, depicting the sublime in the Auvergne region. Other news includes David Shrigley's humorous take on Dutch old masters, the Lloyd's building opening to the public, and the theft of Renaissance paintings by Antonello da Messina from a Sicilian museum.
