“Animacies” at Kunsthaus Merano Explores Matter as Living Archive
The exhibition “Animacies,” curated by Lucrezia Cippitelli and Simone Frangi at Kunsthaus Merano, delves into the distinction between the living and non-living, drawing on Mel Y. Chen's 2012 notion of animacy. This event is part of the triennial initiative The Invention of Europe (2024–2027), showcasing matter as a vibrant archive. Shivanjani Lal’s 2024 installation Mere Provaj [I am Remembering] incorporates sugar sacks, maternal hair, and family photographs to reflect on the Girmitiya. The Mai Ling collective utilizes kudzu to symbolize exoticization. Additionally, Ashfika Rahman’s embroidery Redeem (since 2020) and Bekhbaatar Enkhtur’s sculptures investigate themes of identity and dissolution, while Elia Nurvista’s mural from the Long Hanging Fruits series (since 2020) critiques the colonial legacy of palm oil and global inequalities.
