Angelica Raquel Weaves Memory and Power in "Mystic Threads" at McNay Art Museum

Angelica Raquel's solo exhibition "Mystic Threads" at the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, on view until July 5, 2026, explores Mexican American identity through fiber works that blend personal memories, folklore, and pop culture. Curated by Liz Paris and Lauren Thompson, the show features pieces like "Grandpa's Magic," depicting a childhood ear-candling ritual; "Estúpida's Wisdom," recounting a classroom confrontation with a misogynist teacher; and "He Followed A Woman Walking Alone At Night," which reimagines the Donkey Lady legend as a protective figure. A community-created felt sculpture, "Howl Together," incorporates symbols from a workshop held at the museum on February 21, 2026. Raquel's work uses textiles to reclaim narratives and assert agency, drawing on her upbringing in Laredo, Texas, on the Mexico border.
