Angelica Liddell's Suicide Trilogy Examined

Angelica Liddell, the Spanish artist who won the Golden Lion at the 2013 Venice Biennale, has centered her recent works on the theme of suicide. Her latest trilogy explores the desire to die, continuing a career-long engagement with the love-death duality. Liddell's performances blend literature, music, visual art, and ritual, often with an aesthetic of self-destructiveness. Her 2021 show "Liebestod," presented in Italy by ERT Emilia-Romagna Theatre under Claudio Longhi's direction, featured projections declaring "The only thing missing is to die in the arena." ERT also hosted her earlier piece "Caridad." Liddell's work treats love and death as both energies and social liturgies, which she confronts with aesthetic refinement and a sense of the sublime.
