Angelica Blechschmidt's Backstage Photography at Grisebach

Berlin's Grisebach auction house presents 'Angelica Blechschmidt – In the Archives,' featuring around 300 photographs from the former German Vogue editor-in-chief's archive. Blechschmidt, who led Vogue from 1989 to 2003, doubled its circulation to nearly 140,000. Her backstage images, originally published in her 'Flash' column, captured fashion moments from the 1990s and 2000s with a distinctive, non-exploitative gaze. Unlike the 'porno-chic' of the era, Blechschmidt's photos focus on elegance—'the dress over the bottom'—as seen in shots of Naomi Campbell, Monica Bellucci, and Kristen McMenamy. The exhibition includes personal items like her leopard-print storage boxes and vintage Vogue issues. Since 2023, a research team from TU Dortmund has been cataloging her estate of over 180,000 photographs and archival materials. Blechschmidt died in 2018. Her work, praised by Wolfgang Joop and Jil Sander, remains timeless.
