Angela China's 'Pink Sky' Tests Color Theory at Half Gallery's 'Moods of Nature'
Angela China's oil painting Pink Sky, included in "Moods of Nature" at Half Gallery, 235 E 4th St. in New York, remains on view through November 11th, 2026. The abstract canvas layers pigment into surfaces with the tactile character of décollage while steering clear of direct representation. Its palette, by China's account, almost entirely violates conventional color theory yet coheres in a way she calls surprising. The 40-year-old New York painter describes the piece as androgynous, seductive and complex. Mid-process, stalled on the large canvas, she set it aside and returned to a smaller study; an element in that study redirected the larger work. Scaling up, she notes, is no copy-and-paste operation — the two paintings ultimately share only a color palette. Pink Sky became one of the first works in which China used a second painting as a visual compass, a shift from her earlier purely intuitive method. Smaller reference paintings now routinely sit beside her as she works, revisited even after major departures. She calls the difficulty productive and a turning point that carried into subsequent paintings. Lana Del Rey's "Freak" is the song she ties to the work.
