Angel Fux's "The Shadow Between" Blends Seven Panoramas of Spain's 2026 Total Solar Eclipse
Seven panoramas shot over several hours at Pico Gilbo in northern Spain form the backbone of Angel Fux's composite photograph The Shadow Between, built around the total solar eclipse of August 12, 2026. Planning for the project consumed more than a year. Fux chose the mountain site for its scenery and because it sat within the eclipse's path of totality, allowing a rare astronomical event to be paired with the landscape's shift from daylight to darkness. The same terrain was photographed repeatedly from daylight through sunset and into night, while the eclipse itself was recorded on separate camera setups, yielding both close views of the sun and wide sky frames. Post-processing merged the seven panoramas across contrasting lighting conditions into one continuous scene. Above the mountains, stars and Perseid meteors extend the composition past totality. Fux framed the work as an inquiry into the medium: how to photograph something unfolding over hours, and how to make time feel as though it moves inside a still image. She said she wanted to attempt something new while keeping a visual language recognizably her own, and that she hopes viewers pause within the landscape and imagine each moment rather than simply identify eclipse phases or admire the technique. My Modern Met featured the photographs with Fux's permission; her work can be followed via her website and Instagram.
