Andrea Modica's 'Italian Story' Opens at Alice Austen House, Staten Island
On display at Alice Austen House in Staten Island, New York, Andrea Modica's exhibition, Italian Story, runs until 20 February. The showcase includes an image of a blood-stained surgeon taken after an emergency surgery on a horse at a veterinary hospital near Bologna, six years ago. This series, which first appeared in Theatrum Equorum, highlights Modica's expertise with a large-format 8x10 camera. The surgeon had just performed an operation on a horse suffering from a gastrointestinal blockage. Modica's collection also features scenes of recovering horses and surgical instruments. Born in Manhattan in 1960, she has been traveling to Italy since the 1980s to teach photography and prefers not to title her works, believing that true art should overlook the audience.
