András + Attila Built a Waterproof Wicker Suit for Alexander Skarsgård in Nine Days

Costume designers András Dániel Tóth and Attila Godena-Juhász, working as András + Attila, learned nine days before shooting began on Wicker that Alexander Skarsgård would appear fully nude rather than bare only from the waist up. Directors Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson requested the change, so the duo and their costumers raced to complete a lower half to match the prosthetic wicker torso made by Wētā Workshop. Filming took place in Hungary. Because the suit had to survive submersion, the bottoms were cut from scuba material. The designers wrapped a mannequin built to Skarsgård's measurements in paper tape and cut a flat pattern from it, a traditional couture method Tóth describes as turning a three-dimensional body into a two-dimensional pattern. The white material then required hand-painting, with every printed detail and shade applied by tiny brush, before heat treatment gave the paint a three-dimensional effect matching the prosthetic top. The pair had used the same 3D-printed garment process on an earlier film. Tóth credits the result to composure, saying stress wastes energy and time, and Godena-Juhász cites a close-knit workshop team. Work started on the first day of filming; after surviving it, Godena-Juhász said, everything became easy. Olivia Colman also appears in the film.
