Amtrak Unveils $7-8 Billion Penn Station Rebuild Plan

Amtrak, alongside its design team, has unveiled plans for a significant overhaul of Penn Station, estimated to cost between $7 billion and $8 billion over six years, with support from President Trump. This initiative seeks to transform the existing cramped and hazardous design into an expansive, well-lit stone-and-bronze civic entrance. A boomerang-shaped train hall will include vast sunlit public areas, while a new entrance will encase both Penn Station and Madison Square Garden in Art Deco-inspired columns. The redesign eliminates a suffocating level between the main concourses and train platforms, enhances visibility, and removes roughly 100 columns. Additionally, it introduces more stairs, elevators, and escalators, creating over 100,000 square feet of new circulation space to improve safety and alleviate congestion, although the budget and schedule may be overly ambitious.
