American University in Dubai showcases architecture projects promoting peace and cultural heritage

A series of student projects from the American University in Dubai (AUD) has been unveiled, focusing on themes of peace, cultural heritage, and sustainability. These works were part of the ARCH 502 – Architectural Studio X capstone course, leading up to the 2026 Architecture Senior Showcase, which took place online from May 9 to 17, culminating in an in-person exhibition and award ceremony on June 26, 2026. A panel of international experts judged the entries, granting first, second, and third place, along with additional accolades from faculty and alumni. Notably, a Future Architect Award was given by selected high school students. For the third year in a row, all senior projects incorporated Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in line with COP28 commitments in Dubai. Highlighted projects include a cultural center for Colombian riverside communities, a museum for Julfar pottery in Ras Al Khaimah, and the revitalization of an abandoned desert settlement in Al Madam, UAE, into a cultural festival site. Other projects delve into topics like death rituals in Varanasi, memory and decay in Damascus, Persian carpet-making in Isfahan, Nubian displacement along the Nile, and the effects of AI and surveillance on urban living. The projects were guided by instructors Abdellatif Qamhaieh, Mattia Gambardella, and Nicolas Turchi.
