Álvaro Urbano Resurrects Helen Fowler's Lost Garden at Museo Jumex

On October 16, Museo Jumex's Galería 1 unveiled Álvaro Urbano's installation titled Helen, which reflects on the Casa Cueva that was demolished, a structure originally designed by Juan O'Gorman between 1948 and 1952. Helen Fowler, who painted watercolors for Plantas y flores de México (1961), also established a garden at the site. Urbano, a Madrid native born in 1983, makes his return to Mexico following his 2023 exhibition, Granada Granada. Curated by Rosela del Bosque, the installation features a blend of stone, plant, and architectural elements. The title pays tribute to Helen Escobedo, who managed the Casa Cueva's demolition. Urbano has recreated 29 of Fowler's floral designs as metal sculptures, enhanced by a lighting system controlled from his studio in Berlin. Del Bosque highlights Fowler's significant partnership with O'Gorman, noting her studies with Diego Rivera in the 1930s.
