Alpacas Descend the Kiental Valley in Swiss Alpabzug Photo Series

other · 2026-09-23

A series of photographs captures the yearly autumn migration of alpacas from the mountain pastures in Switzerland's Bernese Oberland. At dawn, a man dressed in traditional Swiss shepherd attire records the scenic mountains, while alpaca breeders enjoy breakfast before guiding their animals down the valley. The herd is owned by the Luginbuehl family, Arnold and Toni, along with Uli Lippl. As the sun rises above Kiental valley, a shepherd directs the animals along a mountain path. Upon reaching the valley's base, the alpacas are loaded onto a livestock truck, with one curious animal peeking through the window. They are then transported to their winter residence at a farm in Aeschi. The images were taken by Fabrice Coffrini for AFP/Getty Images and featured in the Guardian's art and design gallery.
