Allan Joyce Architects completes Sable House in Nottinghamshire with charred timber cladding

architecture-design · 2026-10-13

Allan Joyce Architects has completed Sable House, a five-bedroom home in Nottinghamshire, UK, that replaces a 1950s house where the client lived for over 20 years. The charred timber-clad dwelling features two main wings—a single-storey volume and a larger two-storey building—framing front and rear courtyards. Flat roofs and deep overhangs reduce its visual impact, while glazed openings connect interiors to the landscape. Project architect Oliver Cradock told Dezeen the design aims to "dissolve hard boundaries between inside and outside," with courtyards, outdoor "rooms" and a covered walkway creating transitional spaces. The layout, informed by the family's established patterns of living on the site, includes a skylit living and dining area opening onto the garden on three sides, a snug, guest bedroom, study and utility spaces. Bricks salvaged from the original home form a plinth and low walls framing the garden. A curving staircase under a circular skylight leads to four upper-floor bedrooms and bathrooms. The interior palette is deliberately restrained, using lime-wash walls and terrazzo tiling. Photography is by Richard Chivers. The project was published on Dezeen on 13 October 2026.
