Alice Neel’s American Portraits on View at Serralves Museum in Porto

The Serralves Museum in Porto, Portugal, has opened a new exhibition of works by American painter Alice Neel, curated by Inês Grosso. The show brings together some of Neel’s most celebrated and poignant paintings, which capture the nuances and imperfections of everyday 20th-century American life. In an interview with Ocula’s Baya Simons, Grosso discusses her highlights from the exhibition. Neel (1900–1984) is known for her unflinching portraits of friends, family, and strangers, often depicting subjects from marginalized communities. The exhibition aims to present her work as a chronicle of American society, emphasizing her ability to convey psychological depth and social commentary through portraiture.
