Alice Diop Makes Exhibition Debut with Geste de Consolation at Art Basel Paris 2026

Key facts

• Alice Diop’s first exhibition, Geste de Consolation, opens at the Palais d’Iéna during Art Basel Paris 2026, 21–25 October, with a preview on 20 October.
• The project is commissioned by Miu Miu as Official Partner of the Art Basel Paris Public Program.
• It incorporates film, photography, sculpture, poetry, dance, music, and live performance, expanding Diop’s cinematic practice into physical space.
• The exhibition develops ideas from Diop’s 2025 film Fragments for Venus, made for Miu Miu Women’s Tales, about representations of Black women.
• It unfolds across four interconnected spaces, opening with a photograph by Zanele Muholi and ending with Simone Leigh’s nearly five-meter-tall bronze Sentinel (Mami Wata).
• The central performance arena features live readings of texts by Zora Neale Hurston, June Jordan, Audre Lorde, Marie NDiaye, and Zadie Smith, plus an adapted version of Nadia Beugré’s Prophétique with six dancers and performances by Angel Bat Dawid and Sistazz of the Nitty-Gritty.
• Diop was born in 1979 and is a leading figure in contemporary French cinema; her films include Saint Omer (2022), Nous (2021), and Vers la Tendresse (2016).
• The exhibition follows Miu Miu’s previous Palais d’Iéna projects: Goshka Macuga and Elvira Dyangani Ose’s Tales & Tellers in 2024 and Helen Marten’s 30 Blizzards. in 2025.
