Alice Diop Debuts Installation 'Geste de Consolation' at Palais d'Iena, Paris
French film-maker Alice Diop, director of 'Saint Omer', presents her first installation, 'Geste de Consolation', in the 60-metre-long central hall of the Palais d'Iena in Paris. The work brings together contributions from artists, writers, composers and poets whom Diop describes as women who nourish her. The installation follows a two-week celebration of Diop's work at the University of California, Berkeley, organised by the university's French department, where academics examined her documentaries 'Nous (We)' and 'Vers La Tendresse (Towards Tenderness)' along with her debut feature 'Saint Omer'. That film, a courtroom drama inspired by a real trial Diop attended involving a Senegalese woman who allowed her baby to drown in the sea, won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 2022. Diop returned to France from California shortly before speaking about the project.
