Alexandra Grant's Nuremberg Show Sparks Debate: Empowerment or Self-Promotion?

The Neue Museum Nuremberg is hosting an exhibition by US artist Alexandra Grant, titled "Ein Stern genügt, um an das Licht zu glauben," which features large-scale works combining texts by four prominent German-speaking feminist authors with painted ornaments and color fields. The artists involved are Fatma Aydemir, Rasha Khayat, Olivia Wenzel, and Pauline Füg, all established voices in contemporary German literature. Grant, known as the partner of Hollywood star Keanu Reeves, has stated her intention to give these female authors a platform, but critics question the nature of the collaboration. The exhibition has drawn controversy because the authors' texts are only presented in abstracted forms, not readable in full, at Grant's request, and the promised dialogue with the authors reportedly never occurred. Additionally, Grant initially offered only low fees, citing a low-budget project, yet the exhibition's scale and the presence of Reeves at the opening suggested otherwise. The authors have since renegotiated for higher fees and broader usage rights. The show raises broader questions about appropriation, solidarity, and the power dynamics in the art world. Grant's work "Gnaden Überlast / Grace Overload" was acquired by the museum's support association. The exhibition is on view at the Neue Museum in Nuremberg, Germany.
