Alexander McQueen: Fashion as Art and Political Statement

Alexander McQueen, born in 1969 in London's East End, revolutionized 1990s fashion with theatrical, politically charged shows. After training at Savile Row and Gieves & Hawkes, he earned a Master's from Central Saint Martins in 1992. His debut collection was purchased by Vogue stylist Isabella Blow, who became a close friend and mentor. McQueen worked for Givenchy (owned by Louis Vuitton) from 1996, but felt constrained; in December 2000, he joined Gucci, which funded his creative freedom. His brand, founded in 1992, drew from art, film (Scorsese, Hitchcock), Romanticism, Victorian gothic, and the Brothers Grimm. Collections like 'Highland Rape' (F/W 1995-1996) addressed Scotland's history, sparking controversy. Nature and primitivism were recurring themes, culminating in 'Plato's Atlantis' (S/S 2010), inspired by Darwin but focused on devolution. McQueen struggled with personal trauma, including sexual abuse. Blow's 2007 suicide devastated him, and his mother's death in 2010 led to his own suicide. He aimed to create 'warrior princesses' through his designs.
