Alex Dodge's 'Dream Weaver' Opens at BB&M Contemporary Art, Seoul, With New Monograph

exhibition · 2026-09-21

From August 22 to October 3, 2026, BB&M Contemporary Art in Seoul will host 'Dream Weaver,' the second solo exhibition by Alex Dodge. This event aligns with the publication of 'Between Worlds,' a comprehensive monograph that reflects on more than twenty years of Dodge's artistic journey. Residing in both New York and Kyoto, Dodge investigates the interplay between computational logic and tangible creation, utilizing the structure and language of textiles. His artwork often personifies artificial intelligence, presenting figures that challenge the distinction between living beings and objects. Born in 1977, Dodge earned a BFA from RISD and an MPS from NYU. His notable exhibitions include BB&M (2026), Maki Fine Arts (2025), and group shows at the Tokyo National Museum (2025) and Whitney Museum (2018). His pieces are part of esteemed collections, such as MoMA and the Metropolitan Museum.

Key facts

  • Alex Dodge's second solo exhibition with BB&M Contemporary Art, titled 'Dream Weaver,' runs from 22nd August to 3rd October 2026 in Seoul.
  • The exhibition coincides with the publication of 'Between Worlds,' a monograph from BB&M Contemporary Art Books surveying over two decades of Dodge's practice.
  • Dodge works between New York and Kyoto and explores the intersection of computational logic and physical making.
  • The new body of work uses the structure and language of textiles, treating the 'weave' as both a formal device and a conceptual framework.
  • Dodge draws a parallel between weaving and digital systems, where a single thread generates complex surfaces through order and recursion, akin to bits and code.
  • His paintings test how systems considered sensationless or 'agnostic' in computer science can produce an unexpected emotional charge.
  • The figures in the works hover between animals, stuffed dolls and drapery, inviting projection and evoking the anthropomorphisation of artificial intelligence.
  • Dodge's process begins with 3D modelling and code, followed by physical application of stencils and paint, with the digital never treated as an endpoint.
