Alex Chinneck's Walnut Piano Sculpture Collapses Under Books at Treasure House Fair

At the Treasure House Fair in London, running from 24 to 30 June 2026, Alex Chinneck unveils his latest sculpture titled 'Bangers and Mash.' This life-sized grand piano, intricately crafted from American Black Walnut, stands two meters tall and appears to be collapsing under a pile of 19th-century books. The wood is artistically carved with waves and ripples, despite its inherent stability. The title, a nod to British slang for sausage and mashed potatoes, humorously contrasts with the piano's traditional elegance. Collaborating with Jonathan Fernhead, Chinneck incorporated vintage Bakelite keys that align with the walnut's natural curves. This piece is part of the Sculpture Walk, organized by Flo Horswell, Wilfrid Wright, and Benjamin Brougham, showcasing 35 artworks. Robert Young Antiques facilitated Chinneck's participation. The sculpture continues his exploration of suspended moments and impossible material states, reminiscent of his previous Dior window displays. Charles Emerson's photographs capture the work at The Astor Theatre in Deal, presenting it as a theatrical element. Additionally, the fair at Royal Hospital Chelsea features pieces by renowned artists like Picasso, Dalí, Henry Moore, and David Hockney.
