Aleksandra Krupa Designs Wayfinding for Silesian Museum in Katowice

Aleksandra Krupa, a designer, has developed an extensive wayfinding and environmental graphics system for the Silesian Museum, situated on a historic coal mine site in Katowice, Poland. This system navigates visitors through 2.7 hectares of outdoor space and four levels of underground galleries. The design incorporates slender totems crafted from matte anthracite steel, reflecting the dark hues of the adjacent Warszawa shaft hoisting tower. Each sign features bilingual text (Polish and English) alongside an acid-lime directional notch. The typography adheres to a strict vertical grid for easy readability, with destination names arranged in columns separated by fine horizontal lines. Custom pictograms denote facilities like the Center of Polish Scenography and the observation deck. Larger totems display architectural site maps with grey and yellow building outlines. The materials selected enhance the post-industrial character of Upper Silesia, as the museum is primarily underground and illuminated by frosted glass lanterns.
